My First Faux Dori Travel Journal
July 09, 2017
As a late bloomer in so many aspects of life and on-going trends, I recently decided to venture into a new hobby that has been in existence for some time already, start a travel journal. At the beginning, I was contemplating on whether to pursue this hobby because I knew I had to spend extra money to buy those cute stickers, colourful washi tapes, polaroids/photo printing, stamps, and the list goes on and on but I decided to go ahead anyway. Since it was my first time so I didn't want to get the Midori Travellers' Notebook which is over my budget and plus I don't think I need such a good one first. I settled with a faux dori which I got cheaply (haha) on Carousell.
I got to know about this hobby through photographer and avid journaling Instagrammer Jane and I really love how her artistic side was transferred into her travel journals! I was quite intimidated because it seemed like there were so many things that I needed to prepare for this hobby but then of course I had to start somewhere.
I did a week of research before making my order for a set of stationery because I wanted to make sure I ordered the essential items first instead of being carried away and order 6610,000 washi tapes because each of it is so pretty!
Coincidentally, my Bangkok trip to attend SHINee's concert was around the corner that time, so I decided to document that trip for my first entry. I placed my order for my faux dori, stickers, two favourite washi tapes (hardest decision was to choose 2 out of so many other washi tapes), a pen, stamps and stamp pads, and clips.
The next thing I had to figure out was how to get the photos from my phone to stick it on my travel journal. I did a little bit of searching and found out that Wonder Photo Shop at Sunway Pyramid provides instax mini printing service. It's RM4 per piece and they do have a Buy 4 Free 1 promo going on so you can plan how many photos you will want to print to maximize the benefits!
I wasn't really proud of my introductory page (pic above) but I think that's what happens when it's your first time and the fact you lack different types of calligraphy pens and supplies to make it boom boom oh yas.
One of the tips to have a meaningful travel journal was to keep receipts, tickets, flyers, etc. that can be used as materials for your travel journal but I hadn't the chance to do so because I didn't really spend a whole lot of time at Bangkok to be able to visit places that has either of those listed above. Nevertheless, I still tried my best to collect as much as I could.
It was my first time handling polaroids as well (told you I was late for everything) and I kind of screwed up the writing part with the wrong pens (pic above, finally found the right pen). Through out the whole process of doing this entry, I was quite frustrated at it not being entirely perfect like how I would expected it to be but I also kept telling myself how all these mistakes are forgivable because it was my freaking first time and I shouldn't be so hard on myself. After all, working with a travel journal is suppose to relieve stress.
I added short messages in some of the pages to remind me on the feelings or the events that took place. I also decided to stick my precious SHINee World V Concert Ticket in the book for memory and so that I won't misplace it too haha. I also kept the entrance bracelet which I almost threw away to stick it in my travel journal! It has the date there too so it was a perfect addition to the entry (pic below).
For the 4-pages of SHINee concert photos (pic above and below), I painted a patterned background with the nearest shade to SHINee's official colour to give it a more colourful and fun feel. I also included the setlist for the concert and wrote short messages as well as tried doodling on songs that I enjoyed the most during the concert.
My doodling continued on the following pages and I tried to recall some of the emotions and feelings that I felt for some of the songs and jot it down in the travel journal too. Halfway through, I realized that I couldn't be sticking polaroids in this journal the whole time because it will have a major meltdown when it becomes overly thick. So I was thinking that in the near future I could try other options such as printing sticker 3R photos or even try doodling and painting.
Here are the last two pages for my first ever travel journal entry and I finished all 11 pages in 2 hours time. I had a fun time decorating and noting down memories of the trip though the occasional frustration did happen halfway through but still it was a fun one nevertheless.
I can't wait to fill up more pages in my travel journal and of course can't wait to have more cute and pretty stationery to fill up the pages!
But at the mean time I am still contemplating on getting my own instax mini printer which even though is much more convenient for me and contributes as materials for my travel journal, I can't help but to think of the bulkiness that will be of this notebook if each page has at least one polaroid. Then I thought maybe I have to invest in another HP Sprocket printer which prints sticker photographs, a thinner option and minus the polaroid white border. It has its own beauty and you can use washi tapes to border it on the pages too actually! So I definitely am considering on these two devices for my journaling journey.
