It's The Ship 2017: Not Your Average Party Experience
November 23, 2017It's The Ship 2017, Southeast Asia's largest music festival on sea that had everyone talking about every single year. Especially for party people who love the idea of extensive amount of EDM, booze, and fun on a cruise, this is the perfect getaway. Due to work commitments (note how reluctant I sound here), I was to aboard the Genting Dream Cruise for this annual party prior a week to the event.
Reason for being slightly unhappy was because I felt a little lost on what was to happen there. I'm not talking about the crazy star-studded lineup but about spending on board, how things work there and all. Also, because I had a lot of work to be done so leaving the office to somewhere with bad wifi (it's terrible on sea) just made me more hesitant. But like it or not, off I was with my trusty Spotmatic, boss and project leader to Singapore!
WARNING: This is more like a #35mm photographic post (and a lil mixture of mobile photography as well) so if you are expecting party, boozy, sexy pictures, I'm sorry I don't really have a lot of it but if you want a DIFFERENT perspective about It's The Ship (in terms of the things I experienced and did), feel free to read on!

Day 1: Singapore and Genting Dream Cruise
Day 1: Singapore and Genting Dream Cruise
Upon arriving Singaland in the afternoon, we were starving so we decided on Hai Di Lao steamboat at 3D River Valley. After our delicious lunch, we headed off to Marina Bay Cruise Centre to check-in, low and beholddddd, the queue was terribly long! Thank goodness we were part of the sponsors which is why we managed to get in earlier. We were really happy with the balcony view room which was spacious for two person and I need to mention that being in the bathroom felt like I was in a spaceship, which is a good thing.
The one thing I really like about this ship is that it has all these artsy stuff going on especially on the outside. The ship hull has this colourful mural-graphic which doesn't make it look so boring and on the inside there are also Chinese-meets-Western wall arts by Jacky Tsai as you can see below. By the time we got in our room, we were starving, AGAIN. So we quickly unpacked our stuff and headed down for dinner. Music was already banging when we passed by the main stage to enter the restaurant for our buffet dinner.
Food was good and I tried almost everything there. After that we explored the cruise and walked around to find out where the stages were (there were 3 stages by the way) and we partied for awhile before heading back to our rooms. It was a tiring day and we've got no idea how everyone had the energy to party because of the travelling time plus the super long queue earlier...anyway by 11pm we were off to bed while everyone was still having fun!
Day 2: Bloc Party by Idotshirt
The next day, I was shook to see so many people already started partying even though last night's party ended at 8AM. While walking to breakfast, we came across a Crazy Bathtub Challenge where the girl licked the guy's armpit. Not a very lovely sight before my breakfast, but still I give props to the girl for going all out even though there was no prize for sticking your tongue into some random guy's underarm. By the way, this is a glimpse of how crazy things can get there. Anything is possible on the ship!
After breakfast we went to check out some of the activities on board before heading to the basketball court to wait for the start of the Bloc Party. Artists such as Joe Flizzow and Sonaone alongside some of Asia's hip-hop kings performed.
The aftermath of the hot and sweaty afternoon party led me and my colleague to the buffet place to chill with some orange juice. It was a lovely sight with the sun setting (how time flies!), I manage to capture some lovely shots while savouring the delicious clams for tea time.

We then stopped by a live band before heading for dinner, party a little (witnessed a dance battle with taking off pants and what not...let's not go there), went to a bakery and spent our first SGD on two delicious pastries before heading to bed early because we didn't want to be late for Phuket tomorrow!
Day 3: Phuket and Higher Brothers
Rise and shine! Finally able to be out and about. Felt so trapped for the past few days! Upon arriving, the beach party was getting started but we weren't interested so we went for the free Thai massage provided there. It was my first time having Thai massage because the previous times I felt that it would be ticklish so I didn't want to give it a go but damn, it was good even though it's only for 30 minutes.
Wanting for more Thai massage and not caring about the party, my colleague and I headed out of the compound with the boss to look for more massage parlours for a second round. After some nice massage, we stopped by for a snack at the roadside before walking back to the jetty to get back on board.
The rest of the afternoon was pure boredom because everyone was already dead by now and I could say 70% didn't alight for Phuket because they couldn't wake up on time. We encountered this funny couple who wanted to go to Phuket when everyone of us were already back on board. Well, everything has a timing brother! We hung out in the room while I did my work before having an early dinner and got ready for 88Rising's live acts.
While the live act session was going on, there was this girl and her drunk boyfriend seated at our couch which we kindly told her that she wasn't allowed to be there. She apologized and said she needs to put her boy down for awhile and readjust on how she's gonna lift him up. We said okay and turned to the front and not a minute later when I turn back to check, the guy was all cozy in his bathrobe lying on the sofa that we paid for. Girl was spotted at the dance floor, wow! Not even 10 minutes later, I turned behind to check on the guy again just in case he was vomiting or whatever, and saw him with legs spread open, lil brother hanging loose among the bushes and I'm like oh God. Called security and he was whisked off in a wheelchair. 😐
Higher Brothers was super fun but was disappointed that the rest didn't make it as mentioned in the line-up. We got to take a selfie with Psy. P because we waited for him outside the gents (shameless fangirls). That was the night I truly partied. Not only was it the last night but also because my office work was also done (every night before I slept I did some work plus the useless wifi just drags everything), like finally. The stage we were at had an Indian DJ spinning after the 88Rising event and it was Bollywood all the freaking way!
After unleashing some Karina Kapoor vibes and busting some Hrithik Roshan moves, we changed our location to the main stage where Yellow Claw was playing. I didn't know at that time but then everyone kept reminding me to not miss out on Yellow Claw. Sadly, and no offence to all Yellow Claw fans, I didn't know I was dancing to Yellow Claw and even when they switched DJ, I thought it was still Yellow Claw because EDM sounds the same.........
Day 4: Goodbye It's The Ship
Last day on the cruise! It was a quiet afternoon compared to the previous days. I was so used to hearing boom-boom-bang-bang even from the inside of the arc but the last day was filled with sounds of people paying up and checking out.
Hung out in the room for quite some time and as usual, if I see a plane in the sky or a ship on sea and I've my Spotmatic with me, I will always attempt to snap a shot of it. So I was lucky and got this shot of the plane and boat on a parallel position! And I really love how the gloominess of the sky and the boats parked on sea at the distance made it look like something from WWII. Before we knew it, we were done with all the necessary procedures and ready to leave the beautiful Genting Dream Cruise.

I'm gonna miss the spaceship bathroom. And the amazing buffet.
Initially I wanted to do a full video but due to the inconsistency of video taking, I ended up having a bunch of random footage and some live act footage. What I did was I mash them up into a video and realized that a lot of the footage had interesting sounds of its surroundings that might or might not relate to the video. So I ended up editing it based on the sound of the video. Here you go, enjoy my really badly edited video hahaha hope the transition to the next scene isn't too sudden!

Even though I was one of the many few (most probably the only one) that did not follow the given itinerary for the party, I think it was actually quite fun and a whole new experience. I was analyzing the agenda for the whole trip and actually would like to comment on how thoughtful it was all planned out despite being it's third year only.
Acknowledging my previous hesitation in coming for the event, though it was stressful because the internet was bad which made work progress slow, other than that, I really enjoyed my time there even though I didn't party and drink as much as supposed.
About spending on board, to be honest, I am those type of person that doesn't need a drink to get high and dance unlike most people who needs some alcohol to "warm up". Throughout the trip I bought myself one beer only. Well, that's because I didn't really party THAT much throughout the days on the ship. So if you are okay with no alcohol (orange juice is free 24/7 in the restaurant), than expenses wise wouldn't be a problem for you. But make sure you get the merchandise because you need it for keepsake, come on.

If you are reading this and planning to go to the next one, make sure you bring all the costumes for the themed parties because you definitely don't want to be the odd one out there. Also, if you can afford to screw up your biological clock and sleep at 8AM and waking up at 3PM, why not, because it's a freaking party and no one sleeps at 12AM. The party STARTS at 12AM.
I know I am the last person to even say what I just said there but trust me if you love EDM, if you love all that booze and sexy girls, and fancy the idea of partying on a beautiful cruise, It's The Ship is worth it!
